Bao et al. demonstrate that long-range GABAergic projections from the medial septum control adult hippocampal neurogenesis through depolarizing GABA signaling onto local PV interneurons. Functionally, these long-range inputs are required for maintaining NSC quiescence and ablating them depletes the NSC pool and impairs neurogenesis.

Yeh et al. demonstrate that mossy cells regulate adult NSCs through direct glutamatergic and indirect GABAergic pathways. Functionally, mossy cells at various activity states control NSC quiescence and maintenance through a dynamic balance of glutamatergic and GABAergic signaling onto NSCs.

    Asrican et al. highlight the critical role of endogenous CCK in regulating rNSCs and hippocampal neurogenesis via distinct states of the local astrocytes base on the niche CCK level. These findings have broad implications in neuropathological conditions associated with neuroinflammation.
